Wrestling Travels North to Face No. 25 NC State, UNC in Midweek Action
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel Wrestling team will take on a pair of ACC opponents on the road this week as they travel to No. 25 NC State on Tuesday evening and North Carolina on Wednesday night. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m.
Scouting The Citadel
The Bulldogs (7-10) have been off for the past week but gained momentum their last time out at the All-Academy Championships in Charleston on Feb. 6. The Citadel finished second in the prestigious military tournament, which is tied for their highest finish ever. Taking home titles were No. 6 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj at 165 pounds and Kelby Smith at 197 pounds. Taking home second place titles for the Bulldogs were Richard Alarcon at 125 pounds, Derek Royster at 149 pounds, J.C. Oddo at 174 pounds and Justin Sparrow at 184 pounds.
Scouting No. 25 NC State
The Wolfpack (8-9) are coming off a 40-0 drubbing at the hands of No. 6 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Saturday. The loss dropped NC State to 1-3 in the ACC as they have now dropped their last four duals. The wins for NC State this season include Oklahoma City, Rider, Anderson, Mercyhurst, VMI, Campbell (twice) and Duke. Their losses have come to Oklahoma, Bloomsburg, North Dakota State, Virginia, Ohio, Oklahoma State, North Carolina, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech. The Wolfpack are led by No. 1 Darrion Caldwell at 149 pounds who is 10-0 this season.
Scouting North Carolina
The Tar Heels (8-9-1) wrap-up their regular season against The Citadel. UNC is coming off a 31-6 home loss to Nebraska on Saturday. UNC has defeated Drexel, Lock Haven, Chattanooga, UNC Greensboro, Clarion, Duke, NC State and Edinboro while falling to Kent State, Wisconsin, Hofstra, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, UVA, Navy and Maryland. The Tar Heels are led by redshirt senior Thomas Scotton at 165 pounds who is 24-15 this season. Zac Bennett has also been big for UNC at 197 pounds, going 24-11 on the season.
The Citadel and North Carolina have met in five of the last six seasons with the Tar Heels coming away with wins in four of those meetings. The Bulldogs last registered a win over UNC in the 2005-2006 season with a 33-9 win. Last season at McAlister Field House, the Tar Heels edged The Citadel, 21-16.
NC State and The Citadel have met three times in the past decade, with the Wolfpack coming out on top in all three duals. Last season in Charleston, NC State narrowly slipped past the Bulldogs in the season-opener, 21-18.
Nationally Ranked Bulldog
Turtogtokh Luvsandorj is now 34-6 on the season and ranked in the top 10 nationally of all five major polls (No. 6 by W.I.N, No. 7 by Amateur Wrestling News, No. 8 by WrestlingReport.com, InterMat, and No. 9 by D1 CollegeWrestling.net). He continues to improve his own record as the highest ranked wrestler in Citadel history and his career record is now 60-18 (.770). The sophomore has gone 8-1 against nationally ranked competition this season.
What to Watch
* Derek Royster will have his hands full at 149 pounds on Tuesday night when he faces the top-ranked wrestler in the nation in Darrion Caldwell of the Wolfpack.
* On Wednesday at 165 pounds, No. 6 Turtogtokh Luvsandorj and Thomas Scotton will square-off once again. The two will face one another for third time in the last two seasons with the Bulldog holding the advantage in both previous matches.
* J.C. Oddo of The Citadel and Thomas Ferguson of North Carolina have nearly identical records as they face-off at 174 pounds on Wednesday night.
