Ohio State Edged by No. 12 Wisconsin, 23-18
<div readability="76.2853982301">COLUMBUS, Ohio - A pair of pins and two decisions gave the Ohio State wrestling team 18 team points and a seven-point lead with three matches remaining, but the Buckeyes could not hold on for the win as 12th-ranked Wisconsin edged the Scarlet and Gray, 23-18, Sunday afternoon at UW Field House in Madison, Wis.
The Buckeyes (2-10; 1-6 Big Ten) will wrap up the regular season at noon Feb. 19 when they host No. 16 Northwestern on Senior Day.
Down, 8-0, after the 125 and 133-pound matches, the Buckeyes received a huge six points from freshman Randy Languis, who dropped Danny Arnel in 1:35. The win by Languis, a Central Ohio native from Dublin, served as his second Big Ten dual match win of the season at 141 pounds. The victory also helped the Buckeyes pull to within two points in the team race (8-6).
However, the Badgers increased their lead to five (11-6) when No. 8 Cole Schmitt decisioned Joe Grandominico, 9-3, in the 149-pound bout. The match was Grandominico's first dual start of his career. A freshman from Westerville, Ohio, Grandominico previously was 4-6 in open tournament action.
The Scarlet and Gray's Sean Nemec answered with a win of his own at 157 pounds as he beat Shawn Perry, 9-5. Backed by a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period, Nemec used a pair of escapes and a riding time of 1:44 in the third to garner the win.
Up next at 165 pounds, senior captain Colt Sponseller lifted Ohio State to a 15-11 lead after he pinned Ben Cox in 2:43. The win by the Buckeye from Glenmont, Ohio, native is his seventh-consecutive and moves him to 18-3 overall and 6-1 in the Big Ten.
A 3-1 decision by Nick Heflin at 174 pounds put the Buckeyes ahead, 18-11. A takedown by Heflin with six seconds remaining in the match propelled him to his 18th win and fourth conference victory of the season.
Wisconsin was able to rally in the final three matches as all three of their remaining wrestlers were ranked in the Top 15, including No. 3 Travis Rutt at 184 pounds and No. 2 Trevor Brandvold at 197 pounds.*
