EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern senior Aaron Jones has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week following his impressive 6-1 upset win over Purdue's seventh-ranked A.J. Kissel Friday night. Jones' victory helped NU down the 24th-ranked Boilermakers, 32-6, as NU improved to 4-2 in Big Ten dual action.

The award is the first weekly laurel of Jones' career and the first for a Wildcat wrestler since Jones' predecessor at 184 pounds, two-time NCAA champion Jake Herbert on Nov. 11, 2008.

With NU in control on the scoreboard, Jones began the first period by staving off several solid shot attempts by Kissel and finished it by scoring an impressive single-leg lift and takedown with just two seconds to go before the buzzer. His hand control in the second continued to stymie Kissel, and he replicated his takedown two minutes later, just prior to the second-period whistle, as he brought a 4-1 lead into the third.

Jones fought for his one-point escape at the outset of the third and continued to just wear down the highly ranked Kissel, earning a penalty point to go ahead by the final margin of 6-1. It was only Kissel's fourth loss of the year against 19 victories.

For Jones, his first win of the season over a ranked opponent improved his record to 15-8 with an 11-4 mark in dual matches.

On Friday, Jones will be one of seven seniors honored prior to their final home dual match when 15th-ranked NU hosts No. 12 Wisconsin at 7 p.m. in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Following a season-ending dual on the road, Northwestern will return to Evanston to host the Big Ten Wrestling Championships on Saturday-Sunday, March 5-6.
