ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team claimed four individual matches but was doomed by bonus points in a 28-13 loss to No. 3 Penn State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6) in front of 1,036 fans at Cliff Keen Arena. The loss was Michigan's first in Big Ten Conference action this season.

Senior/junior captain Kellen Russell (High Bridge, N.J./Blair Academy), ranked No. 1 nationally at 141 pounds, needed extra time to preserve his perfect season, using the tiebreaker to edge No. 7 Andrew Alton, 3-1. The two wrestlers traded escape points in regulation and several flurries and half shots in the sudden-victory frame. Starting down in the first tiebreaker, Russell got out quickly and came around to get behind Alton, returning him to the mat for a quick reversal. The Wolverine captain rode out the remainder of the first 30-second go and the entirety of the second to improve to 27-0 on the season. The win was Russell's third over Alton this season.

Sophomore/freshman Dan Yates (Hesperia, Mich./Hesperia HS) also improved his flawless Big Ten record, claiming his fifth conference win with a 5-2 decision over Nick Fischer at 165 pounds. Yates, ranked 19th nationally, fought off a deep single leg early before immediately converting on one of his own off the subsequent restart. The Wolverine rookie added a third-period reversal and 2:42 in riding-time advantage.

Fifth-year senior captain Anthony Biondo (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley HS) cruised to a 12-3 major decision against Nick Ruggear in the 197-pound contest, scoring on four takedowns and adding two back points and riding time to secure a bonus point. The Wolverine captain converted on an early throw by, wrapped up two single legs in the second -- including one in the final 10 seconds -- and countered a low single attempt to earn the major-decision margin.

Sophomore Sean Boyle (Lowell, Mass./Blair Academy) picked up Michigan's final win in the final match of the afternoon, rolling to a 6-2 decision over Nate Morgan on two takedowns and riding time. Boyle struck on low single legs in the first and second periods, accumulating significant riding time after each to end the bout with 2:44 in time advantage. Boyle has won his last four matches.

Penn State earned four bonus wins, including three pins, to put U-M in a hole from which it could not recover. PSU heavyweight Cameron Wade stymied Michigan's late surge with a third-period fall against 10th-ranked junior/sophomore Ben Apland (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS), overcoming a four-point deficit to end the bout at the 5:32 mark. Apland converted on three takedowns, including two in the opening period, to carry a 6-2 advantage into the final frame. Wade chose top and quickly stretched out Apland with a half. The Wolverine wrestler rolled right into it, getting caught flat to suffer his third loss to Wade this season.

The Nittany Lions opened the dual with a major decision at 133 pounds, as ninth-ranked Andrew Long used a big third period to secure a 16-6 win over 19th-ranked junior Zac Stevens (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS). The Wolverine wrestler struck first, converting immediately on a high crotch, but Long evened the score with an escape and a takedown of his own. Long scored two takedowns apiece in the second and third periods to pull away before adding a late three-point near fall at the final buzzer to earn the bonus margin.

Sophomore/freshman Eric Grajales (Brandon, Fla./Brandon HS) narrowed the gap against fifth-rated Frank Molinaro at 149 pounds but could not overcome an early deficit en route to a 8-3 decision loss. The Wolverine wrestler struck on a third-period single leg, but Molinaro scored on takedowns of his own in the first and third frames and added a second-period reversal to control the bout throughout.

The Wolverines (10-3, 5-1 Big Ten) will return to Big Ten action next weekend, hosting Minnesota on Friday (Feb. 11) at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena before heading to Iowa City, Iowa, to face Iowa at 1 p.m. CST on Sunday (Feb. 13) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
