Wrestling Drops 28-12 Decision to ODU
Feb. 5, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Old Dominion won seven matches Saturday, two by fall, and defeated NC State 28-12 in a dual wrestling match at Reynolds Coliseum.
The Monarchs improved to 6-9-1, while NC State's record dropped to an even 8-8.
Old Dominion opened the match with the nation's fourth-ranked 125-pounder, James Nicholson, on the mat, and he improved to a perfect 25-0 by pinning the Wolfpack's Pedram Rahmatabadi in 1:19, giving the Monarchs a 6-0 lead.
The Monarchs' Kyle Hutter, ranked No. 12 at 133, extended the lead to 10-0 with an 11-3 major decision over the Wolfpack's Dale Shull. Hutter got takedowns in each of the first two periods, then got three takedowns in the final period to nail down the major decision.
The Wolfpack got on the scoreboard when Darrius Little won a 5-3 decision over Brennan Brumley at 141. Little took a 2-1 lead after the first period, then got an escape and a takedown in the second to lead 5-2 after two periods. Brumley escaped to begin the third, but Little held off any hopes of a comeback to cut the ODU lead to 7-3. Little, who won for the 13th time in his last 15 matches, improved to 24-7 for the season.
NC State cut the lead to 10-9 thanks to a familiar source, a pin by former national champion and two-time All-American Darrion Caldwell. ODU freshman Scott Festejo actually had the match tied at 2-2 after a reversal early in the first period, but Caldwell worked him over with another takedown and a three-point near fall to take a 7-2 lead after one period. Caldwell when he threw Festejo to his back with a headlock and got the pin at 3:53. Caldwell now is 10-0 in 2011 and 104-12 for his career. He has 57 career pins and sports a career winning percentage of .897. Caldwell has now wrestled 50 matches since his last actual on-the-mat loss. His only loss since 2007-08 was a medical default in 2009.
Colton Palmer put NC State into the lead at 13-10 with a 17-5 major decision over Micah Blair at 157. Palmer had three takedowns in the first period, and got a reversal, a takedown and a near fall in the second to put the match away. Palmer, who had a nine-match winning streak snapped Friday night in Chapel Hill, improved to 25-9.At 165 pounds, the Wolfpack's Nijel Jones and ODU's Dan Rivera traded escapes to begin the second and third periods, and the two went to a sudden-victory overtime. Jones missed a low single early in the period, and then Rivera caught Jones's left leg seconds later and took him down 35 seconds into the extra period for a 3-1 decision, tying the score at 13-13.
Old Dominion's Tristan Warner took a 4-0 lead on Quinton Godley after one period of the 174-pound match, thanks to a takedown and subsequent near fall. Godley escaped to open the second period, but Warner was awarded a point when Godley made illegal contact with Warner's headgear, and Warner led 6-0 after two periods. He won 7-3 to give the Monarchs a 16-13 team lead.
The Monarchs took control of the match at 22-13 when Joe Budi pinned Wolfpack freshman Pat Carey at 184 at the 2:23 mark. At 197, Jacob Henderson broke a 1-1 tie with KaRonne Jones on a takedown with 34 seconds remaining in the match to take a 3-2 decision and clinch the victory for ODU. The score stood at 25-12 after NC State was penalized a team point during the 197-pound atch.
ODU heavyweight Grant Chapman's third-period takedown lifted him to a 3-2 decision over Eloheim Palma in the final bout of the night, pushing the final margin of victory to 28-12.
NC State will now take a week off before wrestling at Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12.
