BOONE, N.C. - Three Virginia Tech wrestlers capped off successful days by winning titles at the Appalachian State Open Saturday in their respective weight class. Two others took runner-up honors and four placed in the top four, including three finishing third. Cameron Hurd and Chris Moon both won their weight class representing the Hokies while Erik Spjut won his class wrestling unattached.

At 133 pounds, Spjut went 3-0 to claim his title, picking up one major decision. Hurd won the 149-pound crown, picking up a pin and a major decision along the way to a 4-0 mark. Moon went 3-0 to win the 165-pound crown, prevailing in the finals 5-1. Ty Mitch and Taylor Knapp (both unattached) took second place at 125 and 157 pounds, respectively.

Nick Vetterlein took third place at 174 pounds after going 4-1 with two falls and two major decisions along the way. Harrison Hightower (157) and Angelo Malvestuto (184) both placed third at their weight class while wrestling unattached and Bobby Lavelle finished fourth at 197 pounds.

The dual meet squad, ranked sixth in the country with a 15-4 record, will host a big dual meet next weekend. The Hokies will take on defending ACC champion Virginia (15-5) Saturday night at 7 o?clock inside Cassell Coliseum as they try to set a new Coliseum wrestling record with over 5,000 fans. The Hokies have won the last four dual matches against their in-state rivals and carry an 12-match conference dual meet winning streak.
