WRESTLING January*31, 2011
AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State's Jonathan Reader earned Big 12 Wrestler of the Week honors Monday for the first time while improving to 28-0 overall (15-0 dual) at 174-pounds this season. The conference accolade is the first for the Cyclones in 2010-11.
Reader remained unbeaten after a pair of victories in New York. At Cornell Sunday, the senior faced his toughest test of the season in 2010 NCAA runner-up Mack Lewnes. The Davison, Mich.-native controlled the match from the start, getting a pair of takedowns in the first and a quick reversal to start the second before going on to win, 7-6. It was only the second loss of the season for Lewnes.
After a short trip west to Binghamton Sunday, Reader made quick work of the Bearcats' 174-pound wrestler Ryan McGarity. Reader was up 9-2 after one period and 15-2 after two before getting the decisive takedown and technical fall nine seconds into the third.
The two-time All-American from Davison, Mich. has earned bonus points for the Cyclones in 19 of his 28 victories this season. Reader is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation in the 174-pound class.
