Huskers Fall to No. 11 Sooners
<div id="ArticleText" readability="91"> Norman, Okla.----The No. 16 Nebraska wrestling team fell to the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners on Friday night, 17-16, in Norman Okla. The Sooners were able to hold off the Huskers, who won the last three matches of the dual. NU dropped to 10-4 and 0-1 in the Big 12 Conference, while Oklahoma improved to 11-1 with a 1-0 record in conference duals.
Nebraska raced out to a 6-0 lead after Andy Johnson (NU) and Tucker Lane (NU) won the first two matches of the dual. Johnson won his fourth-straight match and 21st overall after defeating Keldrick Hall (OU) at the 197-pound weight class, 8-2, while Lane upset No. 10 Nathan Fernandez (OU) by decision, 4-1, for his third victory of the season over a nationally-ranked opponent.
The Huskers weren?t able to keep a hold of the lead after dropping the next five matches to fall behind, 17-6. At 125-pounds, David Klingsheim (NU) fell to No. 7 Jarrod Patterson (OU) by decision, 5-0, before Ridge Kiley (NU) was defeated by No. 19 Jordan Keller (OU) in a tight, 4-2, battle.
After two-straight major decision victories by Oklahoma, No. 1 Jordan Burroughs (165) got the Huskers back on track after defeating No. 2 Tyler Caldwell (OU) by decision, 7-3, to bring the Huskers within eight points at 17-9. Burroughs victory improved his season record to 24-0.
Caleb Kolb (NU) pulled the Huskers within five points with one match remaining after defeating Jeff James (OU) at 174-pounds by decision, 5-3. After James tied the score at 3-3 with the riding time point at the end of regulation, Kolb was able to take down James in the first sudden-victory period to secure the victory.
In the last match of the dual, No. 13 Josh Ihnen (NU) broke his two-match losing streak by defeating No. 17 Erich Schmidke (OU) by major decision, 8-0. The major decision victory wasn?t enough to close the gap on the Sooners as the Huskers fell by the score of 17-16.
The Huskers return to action on Sunday, Jan. 30, when they take on the No. 7 Missouri Tigers at 1 p.m., in Columbia, Mo.
