Wrestling to Resume ACC Action Thursday vs. Duke
Jan. 26, 2011
RALEIGH, N.C. ? After splitting a pair of matches in a tri-dual last weekend, the NC State wrestling squad will look to take a step forward Thursday when it takes on Duke in a dual match at Reynolds Coliseum.
The match will start at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
The Wolfpack defeated Campbell 31-9 this past Saturday, but took a 29-12 defeat at the hands of Ohio University in the Pack?s second match of the afternoon. Head coach Carter Jordan came away from Saturday?s action looking for more consistency from his team, which is 7-5 overall and 0-1 in ACC action heading into the Duke match.
?It seems like for every two steps we take forward, we take one backwards, and we need to stop that,? Jordan said. ?We have a core group of guys ? Darrion Caldwell, Darrius Little, Colton Palmer, Quinton Godley ? who are right on schedule. We need the rest of our lineup to pick up the pace.?
Caldwell, the 2009 national champion at 149 pounds, is 6-0 with five pins in limited action as he comes back from shoulder surgery. Little improved to 21-6 at 141 after a 5-3 decision Saturday over 2010 All-American Germane Lindsey of Ohio University. Little enters the Duke match on a career-best six-match winning streak and has won 10 of his last 11.
Palmer (24-8 at 157) is on a career-best nine-match winning streak and has won 13 of his last 15, including a convincing 13-6 thumping of then16th-ranked Vince Salminen of North Dakota State.
Godley, the regular starter at 174 pounds, is 18-10, which includes a 1-1 record against tough competition at 184. Godley defeated Virginia?s Jonathan Fausey, then ranked No. 18 at 184, by a 2-1 decision on Jan. 15, but lost 9-6 to Ohio University?s Ryan Garringer on Saturday. That snapped a seven-match winning streak, which was a career high.?Those four guys have been outstanding all season,? Jordan said. ?We?ve had some other guys in and out of the lineup, which hasn?t helped, but we?re getting to the point where they need to step up. We have six duals left after the Duke match.?
