Buckeyes Fall to No. 8 Iowa, 33-3
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State wrestling team dropped a 33-3 decision to No. 8 Iowa Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
The Buckeyes return to action at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 in St. John Arena vs. No. 11 Michigan. The match will air on BigTenNetwork.com and will serve as Alumni Night.
Senior captain Colt Sponseller was the lone winner for the Buckeyes at 165 pounds with his 5-3 sudden-victory decision over Aaron Janssen. Sponseller was down 3-1 in the third period, but scored a takedown with 35 seconds left in regulation to force extra time. In the one-minute sudden victory, Sponseller recorded a takedown with just 37 seconds left on the clock.*
In the opening matches at 184 and 197 pounds, C.J. Magrum and Peter Capone had early, although slim, leads on their respective opponents.
Magrum's takedown with just more than two minutes left in the first period over Grant Gambrall gave him and the Buckeyes the start they were hoping for in this Big Ten rivalry. However, Gambrall answered with an escape and takedown that lifted him to a 3-2 lead. An escape to begin the second period by the Buckeye redshirt-sophomore from Oak Harbor, Ohio, knotted the score at 3 a piece, but once again Gambrall countered with another takedown and following a second stalling warning on Magrum, the Hawkeye owned a 6-3 lead. Gambrall took over the scoring in the third period, recording an escape and takedown and his riding time advantage of 2:07 propelled him to a 10-3 victory.
A reversal and riding time of 1:05 was the difference in Capone's 6-4 setback to Luke Lofthouse. With both wrestlers tied at 3-3 entering the final period, Lofthouse scored a reversal with 1:20 left to take a 5-3 lead. Capone, a redshirt-freshman from Johnson City, N.Y., managed an escape with 23 seconds left to cut Lofthouse's lead to one, but the Hawkeye's riding time would eventually seal another victory for Iowa and a 6-0 team lead.
Following the heavyweight matchup between Buckeye and Solon, Ohio, native Zach Stolarsky and Blake Rasing, Iowa took a 10-0 lead. Stolarsky lost a 12-1 major decision.*
Moving on to the lighter weight classes, Bo Touris faced the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the nation in Matt McDonough. Touris, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, scored a pair of escapes in the first and second periods, but was pinned at the 4:37 mark.
A winner of three-consecutive matches, sophomore and 133-pounder Ian Paddock dropped his first match since Dec. 19 to Tony Ramos. Ramos held a 3-1 advantage with the third period approaching, but Paddock, a Warsaw, N.Y., native scored an escape to open the final period. Down 3-2, Paddock relinquished a takedown to lose, 5-2.*
Back-to-back major decisions by lowa lifted the Hawkeyes to a 27-0 lead.* At 141 pounds, freshman Randy Languis, lost, 10-2, to Mark Ballweg and at 149 pounds Matt Ballweg downed Mike Fee, 12-3.
Up next at 157 pounds, redshirt-junior Sean Nemec dropped a 9-3 decision to Derek St. John. Nemec, who hails from Akron, Ohio, scored a trio of escapes throughout the match.
At 165 pounds, Sponseller got the Buckeyes on the board before the evening was wrapped up with the 174-pound bout between Buckeye Nick Heflin and Ethen Lofthouse. Heflin, a redshirt-freshman out of Massillon, Ohio, dropped a close 3-1 decision. With both wrestlers tied at 1-1, Lofthouse scored a takedown with 17 seconds left in the third period.
