Huskers Fall to No. 4 Wisconsin, 22-15
Madision, Wis. - The No. 16 Nebraska wrestling team saw its four-dual winning streak snapped on Friday night, falling to No. 4 Wisconsin, 22-15, in Madison, Wisc. The Huskers drop to 9-3 on the season, while the Badgers improve to 9-1-1.Wisconsin opened the dual with a victory by pin from Kalvin York (UW) at 157-pounds over Nebraska's Cody Compton (NU) to give them a 6-0 lead. Following the pin, No. 1 Jordan Burroughs won by forfeit at 165-pounds to tie the score at 6-6. Wisconsin-projected starter Andrew Howe, the 2010 national champion, was injured in a match last week.
At 174-pounds, No. 19 Ben Jordan (UW) regained the lead for the Badgers after holding off a late takedown attempt from Caleb Kolb (NU) with less than ten seconds remaining in the match.
After No. 10 Josh Ihnen (NU) dropped the 184-pound match to No. 4 Josh Rutt, Andy Johnson (NU) used a strong third period, as he scored eight points in the final two minutes, to defeat Derrick Borlie (UW) by decision, 10-5, at 197-pounds.
In that match, Johnson was able to score an escape with 1:43 remaining in the match to tie the score at 4-4, and followed that with a takedown 10 seconds later to take a 6-4 lead. After a Brolie escape to pull within one point, Johnson (NU) ended with a takedown and a two-point near fall to stretch his lead to 10-5, and pull the Huskers within three points in the team score.
At the heavyweight match, No. 10 Tucker Lane (NU) was upset by No. 19 Eric Bugenhagen (UW) in the tiebreaker period, 2-1. Lane, who was unable to escape in the first tiebreaker period, let Bugenhagen escape in the second tiebreaker period, but wasn't able to score a takedown and dropped the match.
The Huskers were able to win two out of the next three matches as David Klingsheim (NU) and Mike Koehnelein (NU) both won at their respective weight classes. Klingsheim defeated Tom Kelliher (UW) by decision, 3-0, at the 125-pound match, while Koehnelin was dominant in his victory over Danny Arnel (UW) at 141-pounds. The two victories pulled the Huskers within four team points at 19-15, needing a bonus-point victory at the 149-pound match to win or tie.
At 149-pounds, Ross Grande (NU) was unable to score the bonus point victory the Huskers needed after falling to Shawn Perry (UW) by decision, 6-2.
The Huskers return to action Sunday, Jan. 21, when they travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on the Northern Iowa Panthers at 1 p.m.
