Iowa State Wrestles Exciting Dual Against Minnesota
AMES, Iowa - Jon Reader and Andrew Sorenson once again combined to bring the crowd at Hilton Coliseum to its feet despite a 26-13 loss to fifth-ranked Minnesota Sunday.
"We won the matches I thought we should win and we lost the matches that I thought we were the underdog in," Iowa State head coach Kevin Jackson. "We had a 6-4 split today. We have spent hours and hours in the wrestling room working with the guys on individual technique.* We didn't have (ISU 141-pounder) Chris Drouin, who has failed a concussion test.* We hope to get him back in the lineup next week."
Reader got the Cyclones off on the right foot at 174 pounds with a 13-3 major decision over eighth-ranked Scott Glasser. Reader took the Golden Gopher down five times during the match and accumulated almost five minutes of riding time to improve his record to 24-0.
In the most exciting and last match of the night, Sorenson used a furious comeback to defeat seventh-rated Cody Yohn at 165 pounds. Yohn secured a takedown off of the whistle and then a takedown in the second period to build a 5-1 lead over the Cyclone. Sorenson then demonstrated his will for victory by using a reversal and two late takedowns to bring the Hilton crowd to their feet in a 9-7 comeback win.
In one of his first matches back since knee surgery, Iowa State's Jerome Ward outlasted Joe Nord at 197 pounds. In the second period Ward used a tilt to score a quick two points and then used a pair of escapes and exactly one minute of riding time to secure a 5-2 victory.
Trent Weatherman scored a 2-0 win over Joe Grygelko at 157 pounds. Weatherman accumulated nearly two minutes of riding time to wrap up the victory.
Iowa State will next be in action Friday at 7 p.m. against Oklahoma. This will be one half of the Beauty and the Beast event in which the wrestling team will be participating at the same time against the Sooner as the gymnastics team battles Missouri.
