Montell Marion submits request to rejoin Hawkeyes
Iowa's Montell Marion wrestles Pittsburgh's Tyler Nauman in their 141-pound quarterfinal match during the 2010 NCAA Wrestling Championships on Friday, March 19, 2010, at the Qwest Center, in Omaha, Neb.
Montell Marion has taken another step in his bid to rejoin the Iowa wrestling program. The suspended All-American submitted a request for reinstatement to Iowa coach Tom Brands.
“I got the request for reinstatement from Montell and I forwarded it to (Iowa athletics director) Gary Barta and (associate A.D.) Fred Mims,” Brands said Tuesday morning.
Marion, an NCAA runner-up at 141 pounds last season, was suspended from the program in May after a drunken driving arrest. Iowa officials called it a “permanent suspension” at the time, but Marion has remained in school and has tried to get the ban lifted.
When asked last week if there was a crack in the door for Marion’s return to the team, Mims said: “You never want to deny a person an opportunity, but I want to say it would take something substantial to change his situation.”
Brands called it “a step-by-step process.”
