Northwestern Weekly Release -- Dec. 9

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Ninth-ranked Northwestern's last nonconference outing before the start of the Big Ten dual season comes at 2 p.m. Sunday in Welsh-Ryan Arena when NU hosts Eastern Michigan. The Wildcats are off to a 6-0 start in 2010-11, their best start to a dual season since opening 9-0 in 2006.

NU begins its conference schedule on Wednesday, Dec. 15, when it travels to Indiana.

Tickets to the match are available at the door of Welsh-Ryan Arena ($7 adults, $5 youth/students/senior citizens). Area wrestling teams (groups of 15 or more) are invited to the dual at special discounted rate of $3 per person.

Live streaming video will be available as part of NUsports.com's All-Access package while live scoring can be viewed on the NWCA Live Scorebook. Both are linked at the top of the page.

'Cats Climb National Rankings
Northwestern's strong start to the 2010-11 season has resulted in several Wildcats moving up in this week's InterMat individual rankings. Sophomore Jason Welch has moved up to No. 5 in the nation at 157 pounds thanks to an 8-1 start, with his only loss coming to top-ranked Steve Fittery of American.

Returning two-time NCAA All-American Brandon Precin is ranked No. 2 in the nation at 125 pounds and is off to an 11-0 start. The senior is now 44-4 in his last 48 matches dating to the start of his junior season.

At 149 pounds, senior Andrew Nadhir has picked up where he left off last spring, winning his first 10 matches this season -- including seven bonus-point wins in that stretch -- to move up from No. 10 to No. 7 in the national rankings.

Sophomore 133-pounder Levi Mele is now No. 19 in the rankings thanks to his 7-1 start and his upset victory over BU's 15th-ranked Freddie Santaite at the Keystone Classic. In his last outing vs. Cleveland State, Mele edged Nick Flannery, 6-5, thanks to his riding time advantage.

A Word on the Eagles
Facing an 18-13 deficit with one match remaining, Northwestern received a tech fall bonus point win by John Schoen at 197 pounds to finish in an 18-18 tie vs. Eastern Michigan on Nov. 22, 2009. Prior to Schoen's critical win, it was Aaron Jones at 184 who began NU's rally from 18-10 hole with a 4-0 decision over Nick Hendrick. The Wildcats and Eagles each won five of the 10 bouts in the match.

EMU comes into today's dual with a 3-1 mark having defeated Harvard, Sacred Heart and Cleveland State while suffering a 29-6 setback at Binghamton. The Eagles have been led this season by 133-pounder Filiberto Colon and Nick Whitenburg at 197. Additionally, Aaron Sulzer, the younger brother of former NU wrestler and current student coach Keith Sulzer, is penciled in as EMU's starter at 157.

To the Point
Through six dual matches this season, Northwestern is outscoring its opponents by a cumulative score of 197-40. Kaleb Friedley is NU's leading point-scorer thus far with 29, with Brandon Precin (25) and Andrew Nadhir (24) are close on his heels for the team lead.
