ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State wrestling team got major decisions from No. 1 Franklin Gomez (133 pounds) and No. 13 David Cheza (149 pounds) and it proved to be the difference as the Spartans defeated Michigan, 17-15, on Friday (Jan. 29) night in Ann Arbor. With the win, MSU improves to 7-3-1 on the year while Michigan falls to 4-10. "It was a hard fought dual like we expected," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "Anytime you wreslte your rival it's going to be a battle and it was tonight. Danny (Osterman) got a great win and Franklin really put on a display against a very tough opponent. We got off to a good start and that was the key." The dual began at 133 pounds where Gomez cruised to a 9-1 win over U-M's Zac Stevens. Gomez has only given up one takedown all year and is now 15-0 on the year and undefeated in his last 29 bouts. Spartan freshman Dan Osterman gave MSU a 7-0 lead when he got a 3-1 decision over U-M's Mark Weber at 149 pounds. Osterman started down in the second period, got the escape, and recorded a takedown just before the period ended to pick up the only points he would need. Cheza, who was named the Big Ten's Co-Wrestler of the Week on Tuesday, ran his winning streak to seven in a row with a 14-4 major decision over Mark Boyer. Cheza got three takedowns in the second period and added two more in the third en route to the win and give MSU an 11-0 lead. The Wolverines got on the board with their first win of the day at 157 pounds when Dave Johnson narrowly defeated MSU's Anthony Jones Jr., 7-6. Kyle Bounds extended the Spartans' lead to 14-4 at 165 pounds when he defeated Aaron Haynes, 4-2. Bounds led 2-1 after the first and then scored another takedown in the second and the two wrestled scoreless in the third period. Ian Hinton picked up what would be the Spartans' final win of the night in dramatic fashion as he defeated No. 16 Justin Zeerip, 3-1, in a three-overtime thriller. The two competed to a 1-1-tie through regulation and with both wrestlers exhausted, Hinton finally ended the bout with a takedown in the third overtime. "That was the match of the night," said Minkel. "Ian wrestled the match of his life and it was a great battle." With the score 17-3 Michigan State, the Wolverines began to cut into the Spartan lead as Hunter Montoya defeated MSU's Nick Palmieri at 184 pounds and ninth-ranked Anthony Biondo got a 7-1 decision over State's Tyler Dickenson at 197 pounds. Michigan's Ben Apland got a third-period takedown to hold off Alan O'Donnell in the heavyweight bout to make the score 17-12 in favor of Michigan State with one match remaining. At 125 pounds, MSU's true freshman Brennan Lyon wrestled U-M's Sean Boyle even after the first period and put up a fight before falling, 8-4.
