EVANSTON, Ill. -- In its final nonconference dual match of the season, Northwestern captured seven of eight contested bouts to knock off Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 28-15. The Wildcats, who scored bonus points in the first six matches of the night, improved to 5-6-1 entering its test Sunday against No. 11 Indiana. Northwestern was able to open the match at arguably its strongest weight class with 14th-ranked 149-pounder Andrew Nadhir, who was able to take down SIU-E's Kyle Lowman four times in the opening period. Nadhir's second takedown gave him a good look at back points before Lowman was able to wrestle out of trouble. But Nadhir remained in control of the bout from start to finish--riding Lowman for just north of three minutes--en route to a 21-8 major decision. At 157, true freshman Kevin Bialka took on Nick Jones in a match that entered the second period still tied at zero. It wasn't until the final 10 seconds of the second period that Bialka was able to put the first points on the board with a two-point takedown. Bialka used a similar late-period effort in the third, again waiting until the last 10 seconds to turn Jones and collect three near-fall points to lift his margin of victory to nine points and a major decision. Bialka's win pulled him to an even 9-9 on the season. From there it was on to 165 where Robert Kellogg recorded the 'Cats' third straight major decision, defeating Steve Ross of SIU-Edwardsville 12-4. After being caught on an opening takedown by Ross, Kellogg responded and eventually scored his first near-fall points late in the first period. Kellogg then notched a pair of takedowns in the second to open an 11-3 lead, eventually improving his 2009-10 dual record to 5-6. The 174-pound match between Brian Roddy, Jr. and Tim Mahoney proved to be a quick one, as Roddy racked up four two-point near-falls in the first period to open up a sizeable lead. Just four seconds into the second period, Roddy took down Mahoney for the final two points he needed for the five-point technical fall. At 184, Aaron Jones picked up where Roddy left off, notching a two-point near-fall in the first period against Robert Cooney. Jones managed to ride Cooney for more than five and a half minutes throughout the match en route to a 10-0 major decision and his sixth dual victory in 10 outings this season. On the other side of intermission, John Schoen downed AJ Smith by 16-4 major decision to give the Wildcats an insurmountable 25-0 lead. Schoen scored two near-fall points on his first takedown of the match and repeated the feat in the second to take a commanding lead entering the third. He did not surrender a takedown on his way to his 11th victory of the year. An undersized Marcus Shrewsbury put up a good fight at heavyweight against SIUE's David Devine, who held a slim 2-1 lead when the third period began. Shrewsbury started the third by eliminating Devine's riding time advantage, but an escape and ensuing takedown by the Cougar put him back in control and helped him earn the first Southern Illinois win of the evening. Northwestern forfeited six points each at 125 and 141 pounds, leaving Eric Metzler's 7-3 decision over Brendan Murphy at 133 pounds as the final match of the night. Metzler put himself in control with a reversal in the second period and never allowed a takedown to Murphy, one of SIU-Edwardsville's strongest competitors entering the night.
