DALLAS, Texas -- Northwestern got off to a winning start during its trip to the Lone Star Duals tournament Saturday by downing Air Force, 26-15, thanks to a run of six straight victories between 149 and 197 pounds. The 'Cats lost their ensuing match against No. 11 Oklahoma before rallying for a 23-18 victory over Brown--despite spotting the Bears 12 team points due to forfeits--thanks in part to freshman Marcus Shrewsbury's overtime win in the final bout. Lacking a 125-pounder and a true heavyweight during Saturday's matches due to injuries, Northwestern (4-6-1) made certain to pick up the slack at the middle weights against Air Force beginning with Eric Metzler's 9-1 victory over Tyler Untrauer at 133 pounds. Metzler was able to amass 1:07 in riding time to extend his final winning margin to the eight points necessary to qualify for a major decision. Junior Andrew Nadhir racked up 19 points during his bout with Gabe Martinez at 149 en route to a major decision win, his 15th `W' of the year compared to just three losses. Freshman Kevin Bialka continued his solid stretch of wrestling with a 13-7 decision over the Falcons' Darren Snowe that pulled the Wildcats to within one, 12-11. Sophomore Robert Kellogg put NU in the lead for the first time by beating Justin Shandrix 10-2 at 165 pounds. Brian Roddy, Jr. kept the momentum on Northwestern's side with a dominant 20-3 technical fall against Tyler French, tacking on another five points to NU's team score. Aaron Jones (184) and John Schoen (197) completed Northwestern's successful stretch with a pair of decision wins, with Jones riding Air Force's Josh Mohr for over three minutes in controlling the match. Schoen's victory was his 10th win of the season. It was a quick turnaround for the shorthanded Wildcats as they prepared to take on the 11th-ranked Sooners (10-1-1), who feature eight top-20 wrestlers in their starting lineup. Northwestern, forced to forfeit at 125 and heavyweight, picked up its lone victory courtesy of Jones at 184, who wrestled a smart and focused match to defeat Eric Schmidtke by 3-1 decision. The 15th-ranked Nadhir fell 8-3 at the hands of senior Kyle Terry, the fourth-ranked 149-pounder in the nation. But the Wildcats rallied to demonstrate their resolve and team spirit for the nightcap against Brown. Sandwiched between two forfeits to start the match was a huge major decision win by Metzler at 133 as the senior took care of Greg Einfrank, 12-1, for his second major decision win of the day. Nadhir doubled NU's team total with a 17-8 victory against the Bears' Stephen DeLorenzo before Bialka picked up his second win of the afternoon with a 10-3 decision at 157 pounds. Just one point down in the team score, NU received a decision by Kellogg at 165 before Roddy got a crucial second-period pin against Ziad Kharbush at 174 to put Northwestern in the driver's seat. But the Bears didn't quit, winning in tight fashion at 184 and 197 to cut their deficit to two points at 20-18. With the outcome of the match in question, the true freshman Shrewsbury--wrestling up two weight classes from his usual spot at 184--took on Larry Otsuka in what proved to be an epic match to decide the dual. The grapplers took a 1-1 tie into two overtime periods until Shrewsbury was able to notch the 2-1 win and secure the victory for the 'Cats. Northwestern will wrestle one final nonconference dual on Friday, Jan. 22, against Southern Illinois before resuming its Big Ten season Sunday against Indiana in Welsh-Ryan Arena.
