Where:** Orem, UT
What:* Individual Tournament
Wrestling will begin at noon on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. Provo and Mountain View will co-host a junior varsity tournament held at Mountain View High School, with more than 40 participating teams.
On Friday and Saturday the UVU UCCU Center will host The Rumble Wrestling Tournament.
Formerly known as The Rocky Mountain Rumble, The Rumble will bring in more than 60 wrestling teams from Utah, Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Washington. The competition promises to be fierce. It’s the largest wrestling tournament in Utah and one of the largest in the country.
Maple Mountain comes into the weekend event as the team to beat, and certainly is the favorite to be the top program from the Beehive State.
The Golden Eagles recently won the Jaguar Duals and beat 4A’s previously No. 1-ranked Box Elder, 31-29.
Box Elder, now the No. 3-ranked team from 4A, andMountain Crest, will not be at this tournament, as these two schools will compete at the Richardson Memorial hosted by Box Elder.
But The Rumble will have last year’s tournament and defending 5A champion Pleasant Grove, defending 3A champion Delta, defending 2A champion South Summit and defending 1A champion Altamont among its field.
Add other impressive Utah juggernauts such as Millard, North Sevier, Payson, Wasatch, West Jordan, Alta and Davis and the The Rumble has an impressive field of Utah teams.
But tournament director Cole Kelley feels that there are some out-of-state teams that could challenge the top Utah teams.
Centennial, out of the Boise, Idaho, and coached by former Pleasant Grove three-time state champion Collin Robertson, should be one team to watch.
Idaho Falls is another program from the Gem State that has great wrestling tradition.
Deer Park, out of Washington, has fared extremely well in this event, as has North Glenn, also from the Emerald State.
“I think definitely Centennial is one of the teams to watch,” Kelley said. “They are coached by Collin Robertson who was one of the best wrestlers in Utah history and he has done a great job building that program.”
