Putting the two gorillas of Nebraska high school wrestling in the room was soundly approved by the coaches of the said simians.
“This is a great opportunity for us and for the high school wrestling fans in Nebraska,” said Omaha Skutt coach Brad Hildebrandt.
Skutt, winners of 13 consecutive state Class B titles from 1996-2010, is considered one of the all-time best programs in the state. The Skyhawks will face Class A’s top-ranked and three-time defending*state champion Grand Island Friday at 5 p.m.*at the NU Coliseum prior to the Husker-Ohio State dual at 7 p.m.
The individuals include two of the best wrestlers ever in Nebraska high school history.
Skutt’s Thomas Gilman (No. 5 @ 132), a three-time defending state champion and an Iowa recruit, rules the 132-pound weight division in Class B and is considered one of the top five at his weight in the nation.
Grand Island’s Andrew Reidy, who has three state titles as well, has dominated the 138-pound division and has not lost in state competition in three years.
Islanders coach Mike Schadwinkel is known for seeking the best competition his team can find. He has helped the Flatwater Fracas expand to 32 teams, including top-ranked teams from Nebraska, Kansas, Wyoming and Montana over the last four years. The Islanders often wrestled (then) three-time defending Class A champion Millard South in dual meets in the past, too.
Schadwinkel said more competition and a chance to show off two of the top programs in the state fans around Lincoln is a great opportunity.
