Ask Scott VanDeLoo the first thing that pops in his mind when he hears the word “Cheesehead,” and the Kaukauna wrestler isn’t going to tell you it’s a funny yellow foam rubber wedge worn on heads during Packers games.
When VanDeLoo hears Cheesehead, he thinks about something else entirely.
“It’s the biggest tournament in the state and people want to place there because they know when they place there, they’re accomplishing goals that have national recognition,” said VanDeLoo of the 14th Cheesehead Wrestling Invitational that will be held Friday and Saturday at Kaukauna High School.
The event annually brings in some of the top teams in the nation, and this year is no exception. Apple Valley, Minn., will be trying to win its third straight and fourth overall Cheesehead championship. Other nationally ranked teams in the field are Simley, Minn.; Bettendorf, Iowa; Montini Catholic of Lombard, Ill., and Allen, Texas.
They will be joined by some of the top teams in the state, including Kaukauna, ranked third in Division 1 in the latest Wisconsin Wrestling Online ratings, along with Hartford (sixth), Milton (ninth), Stoughton (honorable mention), Luxemburg-Casco (first in Division 2), Port Washington (fourth in Division 2), Pewaukee (fifth in Division 2) and Wrightstown (honorable mention).
VanDeLoo, a senior, is a Cheesehead veteran. A four-year varsity wrestler who was a state runner-up two years ago, the Ghosts’ 170-pounder placed fourth at 160 in last year’s Cheesehead. He is one of only three seniors on the team. The other two, Trevor Koehler and Travis Vanden Heuvel, have also been through the Cheese wars. Vanden Heuvel placed a respectable eighth last year in a stacked field, while Koehler wound up 14th.
