Morris Knolls senior Jan Rosenberg (No. 13 @ 106) hopes to make history by bringing home the school’s first individual state wrestling championship this March.
Yesterday, he joined some pretty elite company by becoming just the fourth wrestler to win a fourth straight title at the Parsippany Christmas Tournament.
Rosenberg (113) pinned Parsippany’s Sam Kovacs in 1:45 to join Delbarton’s Mike Grey, North Hunterdon’s Mike Van Doren, and Whippany Park’s Richard Strunck as four-timers at Parsippany. Grey and Van Doren went on to win Outstanding Wrestler at the state tournament.
“It’s an honor to be with elite guys like Grey and Van Doren,” Rosenberg said.
Knolls sent 10 wrestlers to the Parsippany Tournament and finished third with 128 points behind team champion Nutley (165) and Wayne Valley (157). Parsippany Hills (112) edged Parsippany (96) for fourth.
Rosenberg placed third at the season-opening Morris Knolls Tournament on Dec. 18 and is now getting used to wrestling at 113. He is certified for 106 and will make the drop to that weight in about two weeks.
“Wrestling at 113 will help me,” he said. “Wrestling guys at that weight will give me an advantage.”
“Jan wrestled a good match against a good kid in Kovacs,” Knolls coach Larry Rizzo said. “He’s getting ready to come down. He should do well in the postseason, but you don’t know about anyone at 106 because there are a lot of good freshman and there will be some good kids who come down from 113 at the states. You just don’t know who will drop. But Jan is a very good wrestler and he is doing really well.”
Rosenberg was one of four Knolls wrestlers to win titles. He was joined by 138-pound Steve McKowen, who pinned Parsippany Hills’ Brian Zelasny in 3:02, 145-pound Jon Arbelaez, who beat Morris Hills’ Devin Sullivan, 5-3, and heavyweight Jermaine Eluemunor, who outlasted Union’s Kris Lewis, 2-1.
