Four Michigan teams made the trip to Orlando, Florida this year for the annual AAU Scholastic ?Disney? Duals.* While the Michigan teams did not finish quite as high as in years past, the state was still well represented as all four squads were very competitive against some extremely tough competition.
Leading the way for Michigan was team MYWAY Blue, who took home a very respectable seventh place finish.* Blue came into the quarterfinals undefeated, where they lost against the eventual champions MAWA Blue out of Pennsylvania.* Blue?s only other loss of the tournament came in the consolation bracket where they dropped a close 31-28 dual against the Ohio Eagles.
The other top Michigan team, Siberia Freeze, also had a very solid outing in Disney this year.* Freeze finished in tenth place, defeating several strong teams along the way.* The team suffered their first loss when they fell on Tuesday morning against a loaded Samsons team out of Ohio who would go on to claim fourth place.* Freeze would battle back to the 9th place dual, where they forfeited against AWC Kryptonite.
In addition to Blue and Siberia Freeze, Michigan was also represented by Gold Pitbulls and Arctic Freeze.* While neither of these squads had as much firepower as Blue and Siberia Freeze, both teams were competitive and picked up some solid wins.* Both teams finished the tourney with identical records of 3-6.
Several Michigan grapplers were able to shine on the individual level throughout the tournament and prove themselves against quality national competition.* Three Michiganders posted undefeated records to earn gold medals.* These wrestlers were Sparta?s Nick Trimble, Bedford?s Mitch Rogaliner and Swan Valley?s Mitch Mallot.* All three competed in over ten matches, finishing with an unblemished record.
It was a great showing for Trimble, who solidified himself as a top recruit in the class of 2012 with a handful of impressive wins.* Trimble?s great tournament was highlighted by a decision over Mike Carlone who was a D1 Runner Up in Ohio this year.
After placing at Flonationals in April, Rogaliner had another very impressive national outing at Disney.* Rogaliner continued his strong offseason, by notching several notable wins against some of the country?s top lightweights.* The biggest win for Rogaliner came when he defeated Iowa State Champion Doug Miner.
The most surprising performance at the Disney Duals came from Swan Valley?s Mitch Mallott who put together an excellent run en route to a gold medal.* Mallott, who has never placed in the state, proved that he has the potential to be one of Michigan?s top seniors next year.* One of Mallott?s many strong victories was a decision over 3X Ohio State Placer Andrew Romanchik, who did not lose another match throughout the rest of the tournament.
In addition to the three gold medalists, many other Michigan wrestlers had strong individual performances.* Four wrestlers were able to finish with just one loss, earning silver medals.* The silver medalists for Michigan were Portage Central?s Angelo Latora, Davison?s Jordan Cooks, Shelby?s Mason Courtright and Holt?s Shane Wireman.* Many additional wrestlers from Michigan finished with 2-3 losses to earn individual medals.
All in all, it was a very solid showing by all of the Michigan squads, who have done a very nice job representing our state at the Disney Duals over the past few years.* Congratulations to all of the wrestlers and coaches who made the trip and competed!
