The junior followed in his brothers? footsteps and captured a state title.

Billy Rappo (No. 14 @ 103) has watched his brothers and other Council Rock South High School teammates capture PIAA Class AAA wrestling championships.

Rappo, a junior, didn?t just watch from the bleachers of Hershey?s Giant Center. He competed as a sophomore, earning an eighth-place medal at 103 pounds.

By the time this year?s state tournament arrived, Rappo was in good position to be standing alone on the top of the platform. None of the other 2010 medalists were back at 103, and he was on a long winning streak.

It wasn?t easy. Rappo needed to go to a tiebreaker in the final, but he ended the night with the gold medal around his neck.

?I achieved my goal of being a state champion,? he said.

For that achievement, Rappo is the Courier Times Wrestler of the Year.

Rappo, who turned 17 today, finished the year 43-2. His other three victims at the state tournament went on to place third, fifth and seventh.
