Brody Grothus (No. 12 @ 145) wasn?t like many of the other top high school wrestlers in Iowa who grew up hoping one day to wear a black and gold singlet and step onto the mat inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

His dreams were connected to diamonds, and the Davenport Assumption senior pictured himself tracking down fly balls somewhere in college.

It wasn?t until last year sometime that Grothus said he realized he had a brighter future in wrestling. And it wasn?t until recent weeks the state champion realized there might be an opportunity to wrestle for the Hawkeyes.

Grothus, who projects as a 149- or 157-pounder in college, said Thursday morning that he will sign a letter of intent to wrestle at Iowa.

?It wasn?t until coach (Tom) Brands called me that I really had any thoughts of wrestling for the University of Iowa,? he said. ?I grew up a baseball player. I always thought I?d play baseball in college. It wasn?t until between my junior and senior season of wrestling that I made up my mind that wrestling was the sport I could go the farthest in and I could do anything if I could put my mind in it.

?Iowa was the only place I ever went and watched a college dual. I never really realized I had Division I potential. But when coach Brands and the Iowa Hawkeyes are knocking on your door, that?s the place you want to be. That gets your motor going a little bit.?

Grothus compiled a 175-15 career record ? 10 of his losses came as a freshman ? and went 52-0 as a senior. He placed third at the state meet as a sophomore and junior.
