Going 50-0 and winning a state title would be good enough for most high school wrestlers in California. Not for Lemoore sophomore Isaiah Martinez (No. 8 @ 140).
The Tigers? wrestling standout performed that feat and hopes to do even better next year.
For now, an undefeated season and an individual state wrestling title at 140 pounds makes him The Sentinel?s 2010-11 Wrestler of the Year.
And how does Martinez plan on topping one of just two undefeated seasons in the state this year? Besides winning every match, he doesn?t even want his opponents to be able to score on him, yet alone win.
?I don?t want to have anybody score an offensive point on me,? Martinez said. ?I hate getting scored on.?
Not many people were able to during the 2010-11 season. Martinez said through the season, he only gave up about six offensive points while he earned tournament titles at the Reno Tournament of Champions, the Doc Buchanan, Temecula Valley, and the Coach DeLiddo in the regular season.
And once the postseason start, he took titles at the WYL championships, Yosemite Divisionals, Central Section Masters and then the California Interscholastic Federation state championships at Rabobank Arena.
The trip to Bakersfield was his second.
As a freshman, he also qualified for the state championships and made his way to the semifinals before losing. He finished third. That would provide fueled to feed his the furnace the fired him up for the sophomore season.
?I felt like I wrestled with a chip on my shoulder,? Martinez said. ?I felt like I had something to prove.?
