To say Jordan Conaway (No. 6 @ 112) doesn?t like being in the spotlight would be an understatement of epic proportions.

As soft-spoken and humble as they come, Conaway would be more than happy to go about his business in absolute obscurity. The problem is, Conaway is his own worst enemy when it comes to laying low.

The New Oxford senior put himself on the state?s biggest stage in mid-March, where he became his school?s first state champion when he claimed gold at 112 pounds at the PIAA Class AAA Wrestling Championships.

The career-defining win capped a record-breaking scholastic career for Conaway, who has been named the All-Times Wrestler of the Year.

?I don?t really like that much attention,? said Conaway. ?My mental approach is different.?

That may explain why Conaway barely cracked a smile while standing atop the medal podium at Hershey?s Giant Center after his 10-4 victory over Canon-McMillan?s Connor Schram (No. 12 @ 112), a returning state champ. It also makes it easy to see why Conaway likely turned fire engine red while getting a tour of the town atop a fire engine upon his return to New Oxford High School.

The added exposure should come as no surprise to Conaway, who holds a host of Colonial single-season and career wrestling records. Included in his bag of milestones are three Class AAA Section 5 titles, two District 3 championships and three state medals; he was sixth at 103 as a sophomore, and third the following season at the same weight.

Conaway also exits with a career record of 146-20. One win that may not show up on his career record ranks close behind the gold-medal victory over Schram: his win at the Dapper Dan Classic in Pittsburgh.
