Local wrestling has crashed the national wrestling stage. In a big way.
A host of Mid-Penn Conference wrestlers took to Virginia Beach, Va., and made a splash in the National High School Coaches Association National Championships at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Central Dauphin?s Tyson Dippery (H.M. @119) and Chambersburg?s Dawson Peck led the onslaught by capturing national titles. Dippery won the sophomore 125-pound championship, while Peck dropped down to 215 and claimed junior gold.
Dippery, who finished third in the PIAA Wrestling Championships at 119, stormed through the bracket and defeated Maryland?s George Weber 9-3.
The match was gridlocked at two entering the third, when Dippery, who lost to Weber four years ago in a youth tournament, hit a takedown and tilted Weber for three near-fall points. He let his opponent up and took him down again to cap the victory.
?Obviously, there was some disappointment at states, but I came down here looking for a national title and got it,? said Dippery, who defeated New Mexico state champion Lawrence Otero 6-5 in the semifinals.
?This was a big win. There are a lot of college coaches down here, and it?s huge to do well at this tournament.?
Peck was equally impressive in his march.
In his first four matches, he managed a major, two pins and a tight decision to make the finals. There, he dispatched Ohio?s Ty Walz (No. 15 @ 215) 2-1.
?I finished third and lost to him [Walz] 12-5 last year, so I signed up to wrestle him again to see how I would do,? Peck, 17, said. ?To finish third last year and come back and win it?it?s an awesome feeling.
?With all the District 3 kids placing, it shows how good the wrestling is in Pennsylvania and in our district.?
