Kris Klapprodt (No. 9 @ 171) finished this past high school wrestling season as a state champion. Nate Rotert was a state runner-up.
Now, both are national champions.
Klapprodt, a senior at Rapid City Stevens High School, won the 171-pound senior division at the National High School Coaches Association National Wrestling Championship in Virginia Beach, Va.
Rotert matched the feat in the 189 sophomore division.
Klapprodt made his way to the finals by downing Arizona?s Tyler Lowy 11-4, New Hampshire?s Corey Beck, North Carolina?s Ridge White and Delaware?s Josh Snook(H.M. @ 171). He captured the title with a 3-2 victory over Jakob ?Bubba? Scheffel (No. 13 @ 171) of Maryland.
?I thought it was a great way to finish the year, and I took every challenge head on,? said Klapprodt, who also won the 160-pound national title as a sophomore. ?I got that first takedown in the champisonhip match* and never felt in danger.?
Rotert pinned Pennsylvania?s Taylor Schermerhorn and used a major decision and a decision to reach the finals. Rotert won his title in overtime against Pennsylvania?s Tyler Greene 4-2.
?I really did surprise myself because I thought if I could just get All-American it would be a huge deal,? said Rotert of his first trip to the national tournament. ?I just knew that I had to keep it close and it was just like a match with (Terrance) Maier or (Jarran) Jensen and I got the takedown in overtime.
