Elijah Sullivan (H.M. @ 140) never really pictured himself as a big-city kind of guy.
He grew up on a farm in western Iowa before making his way across the state to finish high school at West High. But Sullivan?s next move with his wrestling career is taking him to the heart of New York City.
Sullivan committed to Columbia University, selecting the Lions after Stanford, Northwestern, Iowa State and UNI expressed interest. He said he also had contact with Nebraska-Omaha before the Mavericks had their program cut after winning their third consecutive Division II NCAA title.
?It?s (going to be) different,? Sullivan said of his next stop. ?They have building restrictions right near campus and they?re still 20 or 30 stories high. Those seem like big buildings to me, and then when you go downtown, you?ve got 90-story buildings and it?s crazy.?
Two of Sullivan?s teammates announced Friday that they?re also making the jump to Division I. State placewinners Garrett Hathaway and Britt Thompson said they intend to walk on at Iowa State.
Sullivan compiled a 43-2 record as a senior, placing third at 140 pounds. He won his first two matches Friday at 145 to move into the round of 16 at the Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach. He?s trying to add this weekend to a resume that includes a Junior National title in Greco-Roman.
