Five weeks after winning a state championship, Union High School wrestler Kyle Crutchmer (No. 9 @ 160) became a national champion.
The Union junior won the National High School Coaches Association Junior Nationals 160-pound weight division Friday night in Virginia Beach, Va., with a 6-4 overtime triumph over Ben Sullivan of Apple Valley, Minn.
The NHSCA Juniors is regarded as one of the most prestigious tournaments for high school juniors and serves as a recruiting showcase for college programs. Crutchmer is regarded as one of the top wrestlers in his weight class. HSwrestling.net ranked him ninth in its high school 160-pound national rankings in January.
Crutchmer, who defeated Broken Arrow senior Zach Skates (No. 11 @ 160) in February for the Class 6A 160-pound state title, won three of his six matches in Virginia by fall. Crutchmer defeated Silas Nacita out of California in the semi-finals, 8-5, to advance to the finals match against Sullivan.* Skates is competing at the NHSCA Senior Nationals this weekend in Virginia Beach.
