Letchworth junior Chris Nevinger (H.M. @ 145) lost his bid for three straight national titles when he dropped a triple overtime decision to Brett Pfarr of Minnesota in the 152-pound semifinals.
Nevinger, a two-time New York state champion, took a 3-0 lead against Pfarr, but was unable to hold on in regulation. In the first OT, Nevinger tilted Pfarr for two points but late in the second OT was put on his back with just a few seconds left to force a third OT.
Nevinger was the No. 1 seed, while Pfarr was seeded No. 4. Pfarr also knocked off Medina?s Tristan Hamner 6-4 in the quarterfinals.
Nevinger fell to 4-1 in the tournament, including three wins by either pin or technical fall.
Warsaw freshman Burke Paddock will be going for a three-peat today when he wrestles for the 171-pound title at the High School National Wrestling Championships at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.
Paddock, who also won the national crown as both a seventh- and eighth-grader, is 4-0 in the tournament ? either pinning or winning by technical fall over all four of his opponents, including his 15-point tech fall over top-seeded Sonny Armstrong of Pennsylvania in the semifinals Thursday.
