They won a combined 296 of 327 matches over the last four years, but Derry?s Travis Shaffer (H.M. @ 140) and Kiski Prep?s Evan Henderson (No. 5 @ 140) weren?t truly recognized until they pulled off upsets in Sunday?s 37th annual Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic at Pitt?s Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
Shaffer and Henderson, both seniors, knocked off Monroeville (Ohio) teammates Hunter Stieber (No. 1 @ 135) and Cam Tessari (No. 1 @ 140).
Since 1974, the Dapper Dan Classic, dubbed the Rose Bowl of wrestling, has pitted the country?s top recruits against Pennsylvania?s best.
Thanks in part to Shaffer and Henderson, the Pennsylvania team beat a heavily favored United States team, 27-18, improving Pennsylvania?s record to 18-19 and giving the state just its second win since 2000.
Initially chosen to compete in the preliminary match on the WPIAL All-Star Team, Shaffer got the opportunity to join the Pennsylvania squad when Solanco?s Dan Neff (No. 5 @ 135) went down with an injury.
?I definitely wasn?t expecting it. ? I didn?t even think they?d put me on the Pennsylvania team if someone got hurt,? Shaffer said. ?But I was very happy to accept the opportunity to wrestle him (Stieber), even though he was a complete stud.?
Stieber, a four-time Ohio state champion who was ranked No. 1 in the country all season by HSwrestling.net, won 203 of 205 varsity matches and was wrestling his last high school bout before joining Ohio State?s roster next winter.
