Michael Innes didn?t find out until Friday that he would be included in Sunday?s Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic.* When Dan Neff (No. 5 @ 135) of Solanco suffered an injury, it opened a spot on the WPIAL team that was filled by the Chartiers-Houston senior with only two days to prepare.
Innes also didn?t expect to spend much of the first period of his 140-pound bout against Brian Gibbs of Bedford, Mich., on his back.* Innes wasn?t giving up points, just having a nasty cut on his chin attended to be the training staff at Pitt?s Fitzgerald Fieldhouse.
The cut came early in the bout and would later require five stitches to close. Innes had as many points as stitches in a 5-3 decision that helped the WPIAL make Classic history by recording the event?s first shutout, 42-0, over Michigan.
In the feature dual meet, Pennsylvania defeated the United States for only the second time in 11 years, 27-18.
Travis Shaffer (H.M. @ 140) of Derry, who was originally selected for the WPIAL team but moved into Neff?s spot after the injury, was named Outstanding Wrestler for Pennsylvania with a 7-2 decision over Hunter Stieber (No. 1 @ 135) of Monroeville, Ohio, at 135 pounds. Stieber was 203-2 and won four state titles.
