For No. 11 Bakersfield Faces Tough Opening Round Competition and many other topics visit

Bakersfield High (No. 11) certainly didn?t get any favors from the CIF?s seeding committee in its quest to repeat as state wrestling champion this weekend at Rabobank Arena.

Seven of the 10 Drillers who qualified for the tournament will run into an opponent ranked in the state?s top 10 (according to The California Wrestler website) before the quarterfinals. That includes possible round-of-16 matchups for 112-pounder Ian Nickell, ranked No. 4, against No. 8 Garrett Fortado of Oakdale, and for 130-pounder Natrelle Demison (H.M. @ 130), No. 2 at 130, against Union Mine?s Cody Tow (H.M. @ 130), who was ranked No. 1 before placing third at the Sac-Joaquin Section?s Masters tournament Saturday.

Even defending 160-pound state champion Bryce Hammond (No. 1 @ 160) didn?t escape a tough draw; he?ll face No. 11 Adam Busch of Castro Valley in the first round.

Bakersfield (No. 11) is ranked second in the state behind Clovis (No. 9), which qualified 14 wrestlers.
