For Rick Reilly: Really? and many other topics visit HSWrestling.net

Rick Reilly has been voted National Sportswriter of the Year 11 times.

Do you know what was lacking in each of these years? An article about wrestling.

What did Rick do? He waited until a story became available to trash the sport before he decided to write about it. Reilly, who receives praise for his articles on the NFL, NBA, and other professional sports, missed the boat entirely in his article about the default by Joel Northrup to Cassy Herkelman.

In the article Reilly depicts Northrup?s father as a wild-eyed evangelist who hates women and it couldn?t be further from the truth. The assumption that Northrup?s decision to default was his father?s (Reilly doesn?t ?feel as bad for Cassy as I do for Joel.?) is insulting to the wrestler who openly expressed his reasoning for the default.

Reilly went on a crusade to protect someone who needs no protection ? a real sign of the chauvinism he so eagerly sought for his piece.

The Northrup?s, Herkelman?s, and the coaching staff on both teams handled the situation with poise and grace throughout the tournament. Not a negative word was quoted to the press, yet Reilly went on a crusade to protect someone who needs no protection ? a real sign of the chauvinism he so eagerly sought for his piece.

Our suggestion to Rick Reilly is simple: the golden rule.

If you don?t have anything nice to say, don?t say anything at all.
