Re: 38 Yrs Ago: 4 Dead in Ohio From one of the books I've read about Kent State, more than one person seemed surprised it happened at that particular school, and not somewhere else known more for antiwar protests. For example, Ohio University. About the same time at OU, a nearly-completed cafeteria complex was firebombed, suffering serious damage. From what I've read from newspaper accounts from 1970, when the shootings took place at Kent, the OU administration immediately cancelled classes for the quarter and ordered all students to leave Athens within 24 hours. There were long lines at Greyhound and the train station. The 1970 graduation ceremony was cancelled; the Class of '70 had their graduation ceremony ten years later, with my class.
What an incredibly turbulent time.

PS One of the students wounded at Kent State later became a prosecutor in Athens County, Ohio
