I could look up dozens of one hit wonders and dozens of terrible songs that were hits on the charts from any decade in the last 5.

Yes, the 80's had some complete crap, but so did every other decade.

I'm as big of a 60's and 70's rock fan as you'll find, but even I can admit that there was as much if not more crap than quality.

I've been pretty far removed from what's considered "popular" music for the last 8 or 10 years, so I'd be tempted to say the same as you about the late 90's and 2000's, but there is good music out there. You just have to look harder to find it in an industry dominated by hip hop.
