I will have to disagree, in part, with that statement. The 80s and the 90s gave us some wonderful music, although some of it might not be construed as "popular":
80s (to name but a few):
* Pixies
* U2
* REM
* Joy Division
* Metallica
* Police
90s:
* Nirvana
* Blur
* A Tribe Called Quest
* Radiohead
* Wilco
* Dr. Dre/Snoop Dogg
As for the "one-hit wonders" of those decades, we'll see where Jermaine Dupree,
Chris Brown, Tokio Hotel, any
American Idol product, Pussycat Dolls, Avril Lavigne, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Timbaland and any number of the modern crap is in 20 years...
